We stand with the people of Ukraine. IACP press statement on Ukraine war.
The Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), the largest professional body for counsellors and psychotherapists in Ireland, condemn the Russian military invasion of the Ukraine and stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
The aggression shown to citizens of the Ukraine in the past number of weeks has been catastrophic and devastating. The tragic loss of life that has resulted is unspeakably tragic. The disruption and chaos caused to millions of people is horrifying.
Individuals, families and communities have been torn apart and asunder. The immediate reality for millions is that of utter devastation, loss and grief. The long-term psychological impact of the war will continue to impact the citizens of the Ukraine for many years.
Around the world and in Ireland, those from Ukraine, or who have family living in the Ukraine will be suffering the psychological effects of this injustice, such as trauma, PTSD, anxiety and depression. This invasion has also had an impact on Irish people as it has raised feelings of outrage, sorrow, helplessness as well as uncertainty and anxiety about the future.
We in the IACP stand in solidarity with the people of the Ukraine. We recognise the breach of freedom and the rights of the individual in this assault of the people. It is an affront to democracy, and we support the efforts of the people of Ukraine to uphold their humanity, not least their lives.
