WNWRC - Therapeutic Interventions for Eating Disorders from a Biopsychosocial Perspective


Presenters Bio:

Mary Harron is a  registered Psychiatric Nurse, Registered Nurse Prescriber working with individuals with a diagnosis of an eating disorders and other co morbid mental health illnesses. She attended Letterkenny Institute of Technology qualifying with a First Class Hons, Bachelor of Science, and Degree in Psychiatric Nursing. As well as working as a full time Clinical Nurse Specialist and CBT-E (Enhanced Cognitive Therapy for Eating Disorders) therapist I attended NUIGalway and qualified 2015 as a nurse prescriber. She completed an Advanced Nurse Practice, Master Degree at NUIGalway in 2018.

As part of the further development of acute service for eating disorders. She worked as a member of Sligo/Leitrim Adult Eating Disorders Service and collaborated with staff in Sligo University Hospital interdisciplinary teams to develop an evidence based approach for the care & Management of Really Sick Inpatients with Anorexia Nervosa. A pop up eating disorders team was established in 2014.  The team initially utilised the MARSIPAN guidelines to develop individualised recovery care plans.


Workshop Outline: 

Overview of Eating Disorders & risks associated with eating disorders management in the community settings. Over 18’s

Recognising risk and managing risk when supporting patients with a diagnosis of an eating disorder 

 Describe early psychological interventions

 Explore appropriate referral pathways and signposting for high risk patients

 Body image and eating disorders

The impact of socio economic and cultural influence on the psychology of eating disorders and presentations in Ireland

For participants to enhance and develop an appreciation of the relationship between the physical and mental health needs of patient with eating disorders    

 Identify risk management strategies to support clients with eating disorders 

Develop a knowledge of current care pathways between Primary Care, Community Mental Health Care and Inpatient are ettings for clients with Eating Disorders
