Jim Hutton first trained as a group and couple’s counsellor in 1980 with Stanhope Street Alcohol Treatment Centre, Dublin. He received his diploma in counselling at NUI Maynooth in 1999 before working for 21 years with Youthreach, the state’s agency for second chance education. He has a BA(Hons.) in counselling and psychotherapy. Jim has served as chairperson of the gender and sexual diversity group for IACP and is currently a member of the IACP’s recently formed Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee.
Jim has practiced in this specific area of one to one and couples counselling since 2013. He began providing the country’s first group therapy for over 18 yr old Transgender Spectrum people at Insight Matters in Dublin from 2016 and is currently in partnership with BelonG To in providing nationwide online counselling and psychotherapeutic service for young LGBTI+ people. fund. He runs a separate fortnightly service for the parents of LGBTI+ young people. This service is currently funded by the charity set up by RTE’s Late Late Toy Show. He is regularly engaged throughout the country as a speaker and workshop tailored to the diverse needs of professional and voluntary groups including pupils and teachers, in the area of self-care awareness and gender and sexual diversity.
This presention aims to provide an introduction to LGBTI+ Headline History, both National and International. To offer insight and preparation for the inclusion of Gender & Sexual Diversity work now or in future individual practice. To outline the Importance of “role” and “language use” in the therapeutic space. To highlight common fears, perceptions and misconceptions in this area in the therapeutic space. To provide further resourcing information and contact details for same.
