Presenters Bios: 

Patrick McElligott is a Gender & Orientation Support Worker and has worked with GOSHH since November 2012.

Patrick’s role includes education, advocacy, facilitation and support in the areas of Gender and Orientation. He works with people with diverse genders and orientations, their families and professionals that provide a service or support for them. This is facilitated through one to one support, facilitation of support groups, capacity building and awareness raising workshops and training events.

Patrick is a trainee Gestalt Psychotherapist and has a background in facilitation, conflict resolution and hypnotherapy. He has additional qualifications in personal development and counselling skills, group consultation and evaluation, narrative coaching, trauma informed care, working with DSGBV, and is a Reiki and Seichem master.


Shauna is a Gender and Orientation Worker and has worked with GOSHH since 2019.

Shauna is responsible for developing and maintaining individual support services for LGBTI+ people under 25 across the Mid-West. This is provided through one to one work by facilitating personal support sessions with people in the areas of gender and orientation. Shauna’s role includes education and training for professionals in the area of gender and orientation in the Mid-West. In addition to this, Shauna provides counselling to people over 18.

Shauna has a BSc in Applied Social Studies in Social Care and an MSc Degree in Integrative Psychotherapy. Shauna has specific training in areas of psychosexual therapy, couples therapy, CBT and trauma.


Workshop Outline:

The workshop has elements of facilitated discussion, participatory learning, and personal development. Methodologies include large and small group work, individual reflection, and group discussion in order to deepen awareness and understanding of our own, and client’s experiences of gender and orientation.Some of the key learning goals of the day include:


• Building confidence to facilitate LGBTI+ discussions
• Increase capacity to support clients/service users who identify as LGBTI+ discussions
• Identify & become familiar with best practice guidelines & policies
• Learn to identify Homophobic & Transphobic behaviour
• Build capacity to support individuals who are experiencing discrimination on the grounds of their gender and/or orientation
• Explore how gender and orientation impacts the experience of individuals in society
