WNWRC - 3 Creative Arts Therapies – A Taster Day Of Music, Art & Drama


Presenters Bios:


 IACP WNWR Committee member David Madden introduces 3 creative arts therapists. 


Grainne Egan – Music: Gráinne is a graduate of the University of Limerick with a master degree in Music Therapy. Throughout her academic and professional career she has worked as a music therapist in a hospice, in a hospital for neuro-disability, a primary school, nursing homes and with people with intellectual and physical disability. She is also qualified as a neurological music therapist.


Anne Connolly – Drama: AN specialise in developing and delivering drama therapy workshops based on fairy tales and myths and I am a recipient of the Upstart 2018 Creative Arts and Disability Award in recognition of my workshop ‘The Cloth of Dreams’.  In 2020, in collaboration with a psychotherapist, I designed and delivered several workshops, including ‘The Selkie’ with the Irish Wheelchair Association, ‘The Seal Woman’ with a Women’s Traveller. Save the Moon’ with Down Syndrome Mayo.  I am also co-founder of The Labyrinth Project, the labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness, and the project offers a ritual involving the creating and walking of the labyrinth path. 


Joanne Dwyer – Art therapy :Joanne is an art therapist based in The Dancing Soul Therapy Center, Athlone, working both in the community and in private practice, supporting people of all ages and abilities find healing through the art making process.


Workshop Outline: 

3 one hour workshops with Q+A

Grainne Egan – Music. A PowerPoint presentation including slides introducing what music therapy is and how it can be used in different settings with different people, as well as how it can be combined with other therapies such as speech and language therapy and physiotherapy. Some case examples will be included in the talk along with the demonstration of musical examples ( techniques) that can be used during music therapy.


Anne Connolly – Drama. An experiential drama therapy workshop based on a fairy tale, followed by an information session. Learning / teaching methods that will be used e.g. lectures, workshops, tutorials etc.: Experiential Information Workshop followed by Q & A.


Joanne Dwyer – Joanne will give a brief history of the art therapy MA level qualification and look briefly at the varying modalities within the profession today. She will share some of her own approaches within her private practice and some of the relevant theory and recommendations. There will be a Workshop taster to follow where participants will have the opportunity to experience the an art making directive. This will be a brief opportunity to consider the implementation of art making into other psychotherapy practices.


CPD Certs will be emailed to participants after attendance at the Workshop
