Presenter bio:

Jim Hutton MIACP first trained as a youth worker in 1975 (CYC/Health Education Bureau) and as a counsellor in 1979 for couples and groups dealing with alcohol addiction (Stanhope Street Alcohol Treatment Centre, Dublin).

He has spent 22 years as a centre advocate and life skills teacher with Youthreach, the state agency for second chance education before retiring in 2021. During his time at Youthreach, his further educational training included a diploma in counselling (Maynooth NUI) and an honours degree incounselling and psychotherapy (DBS). He is also a qualified literacy teacher (NALA). Jim runs a private practice in counselling, psychotherapy and educational training with a focus on relationships, addiction, care-awareness, and LGBTQI+ issues. His client portfolio in Care Awareness includes BelonG To LGBTQI+ Youth Services, SOAR, Insight Matters and The Irish Defence Forces. He is a former editor, broadcast journalist and media lecturer.


Guest Bio:

Dr. Manish Tomar graduated with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience as a scholarship student atCologne University, Germany in 2020 and with a Masters in Neuroscience from Jiwali University, Gwalior, India.

He has a BA in Biotechnology from Amity University, Uttar Pradesh in India. Manish is a native of New Delhi, India and is a technical research scientist for Abbott Laboratories, based in Longford. His technical expertise includes immunochemistry, bioassays, molecular biology, microbiology and genetics. He has been involved with multiple agencies across internet media platforms and in situ presentations for the advancement of scientific community outreach programmes including coordinating facilitator and speaker at the United Nations Conference of Youth for Climate Change atthe COY Conference in Bonn, Germany in 2017. He is an advocate and practitioner of yoga and meditation.


Workshop Outline:

  1. The workshop will examine the essential role of self care and care awareness in the therapeutic space, drawing initially from Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

  2. To examine the essence and interconnectivity of a holistic approach of care awareness inclusive of physical, spiritual, emotional, psychological and intellectual wellbeing
  3. To examine the harmonious relationship needed between sleep, circadian rhythm, nutrition, and exercise to encourage and facilitate a positive and lasting outcome for ourselves and our clients

  4. To look at what science and neuroscience is telling us about the self care connectivity between the brain, heart, ANS, PSNS, and the microbiome axis and how this interplays with our work as counsellors and psychotherapists
