Presenter Bio: Vanessa Lacey is an experienced speaker and appears regularly on television and radio on behalf of TENNI where she is the Health and Education Manager. She is also a Transgender person. TENNI is the organization founded in to support Transgender people. Vanessa has a background in community development, training and education. She has experience in counselling and psychology and is founder of TranSE and Waterford's transgender support group, and is Chairperson of sOUTh. She was voted LGBT person of the year in the South-East in 2011. Vanessa is also a proud parent.
Outline:
Vanessa will explain the issues that affect Trangender people, and provide the essential knowledge the counsellor needs to support those in transition. She will discuss the importance of using the right pronouns during sessions and how best to do this. She will discuss the difficulties Transgender people have as they go through the process of transition. There will be opportunities for questions throughout the day as well as experiential exercises. Issues such as the various medical procedures and medications that are available to those in transition will be outlined as well as ways to support various members of the family through psychoeducation. Referal resources will also be discussed. Participants will also have access to the latest research from other Countries where Transgender protocols are in place and working well.
