Child Protection and the Counsellor / Psychotherapist

Mandatory reporting of Child Sexual Abuse is being introduced to Ireland. 

This course aims to:

  • Provide clear information to Counsellors / Psychotherapists working with Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse regarding their legal obligations to report retrospective allegations
  • Explore strategies to manage the impact on the Therapeutic Relationship.

The course is participative and experiential, and includes presentations, small group work and role plays.

Extensive hand-outs will be provided.

The training is being presented by the organisation One in Four.

Course Outline

10:00     Setting the Context: Developments in Irish Child Protection Policy

10:30     Legislative Framework

Discussing the provisions of the Criminal Justice (Withholding of Information on Offences against Children and Vulnerable Adults) Act 2012, the Children First Bill 2012 and the legal obligations created

11:30     Break (Tea / Coffee Provided)

11:45     Mandatory Reporting and the Therapeutic Relationship

Exploring how the impact of mandatory reporting on the therapeutic relationship with adults who have been sexually abused as children can be facilitated positively using traumatic transference and traumatic countertransference

13:00     Lunch (lunch not provided)

14:00     Managing the Disclosure Phase

Developing strategies to introduce mandatory reporting to clients at the first meeting

15:30     Break (Tea / Coffee provided)

15:45     Reporting to the Statutory Authorities

What happens when a report is made to the HSE and / or to the Gardaí?
